"How can someone give advice when they're not qualified?": Tom Jones hits out at rival judge Simon Cowell

Pop legend Sir Tom Jones will have Simon Cowell’s ears ringing today… after blasting the music mogul’s ability to judge singers.

Sounding the first angry note in a head-to-head battle between BBC1’s The Voice and ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent, the Sixties star stormed: “I have problems when people who have never got up on a stage to sing judge those who do.

“Who are they to say? Simon Cowell is a record man, not a singer. How can someone give advice if he or she is not qualified?”

Sir Tom, with 100 million record sales and 17 hit singles behind him, added: “It’s like critics who criticise actors, never having been on a stage. Or having a teacher not experienced in teaching.”

The It’s Not Unusual singer let rip as he prepared to make his debut as a judge this Saturday on The Voice.

Last week war was declared when ITV and X Factor chief Simon, 52, moved the transmission date of Britain’s Got Talent to clash with BBC’s Saturday launch of its £25million rival show.

But Sir Tom, 71, reckons it’s no contest – and even hinted that he had snubbed offers from the talent show boss to be a judge for him.

“The shows with judges from other areas of show business are all very well and good, but The Voice is unique because the four coaches are all singers, can all make records and know what they’re talking about,” he said .

“I’ve been approached by other talent shows, not directly, but through my agent and I’ve always said no because of all that other stuff. I’ve never wanted to do one until I saw The Voice.”

Millions are expected to tune in to see Sir Tom step into uncharted territory in what is set to be the biggest show to hit UK TV screens this year.

Along with fellow mentors, singer Jessie J, Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am, and Danny O’Donoghue from The Script, he will chose or reject wannabes during ‘blind’ auditions in which the judges will sit with their back to the singer.

Then in a series of live ‘battle’ rounds the stars and their chosen singers will slug it out until one is crowned the winner, landing a recording contract. Will.i.am is reportedly being paid £500,000 to appear, with Sir Tom on £300,000; Jessie J, £200,000 and Danny, £100,000.

Sir Tom said he only agreed to do The Voice after seeing the show in America where it has been a huge hit because contestants are judged purely on their talent and are not ridiculed on camera.

He added: “When I was asked to do this show I loved the concept, but I had to know who the other mentors were before I would agree. There are loads of judges with experience in the record industry, but can’t sing. They may work for a record company, but to have stood where that person is standing is a unique thing. That’s the difference.

“It frustrates me when people comment on others singing when they haven’t actually been there themselves. You’ve got the shows with record executives, people who are listening for commercial reasons and whether someone will sell.

“I’m not listening for that. I’m listening for special talent that needs to be heard.” But Sir Tom Jones knows it takes more than talent to become a global superstar. With so many years experience, he is in the perfect position to hand out advice to his acts. And his first words of wisdom will be, forget about image and don’t try to be a hearthrob.

He said: “Image was always an issue with me, but it can backfire. That whole thing about women throwing their lingerie at me, that was bad for me, because it alienated a whole section of my audience. It gave people the idea I’m a man who sings to women, and that’s not true.”
