The House of the Rising Sun

The Animals were an English music group of the 1960s formed in Newcastle upon Tyne
during the early part of the decade, and later relocated to London. Known for their gritty,
bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as exemplified by their number one
signature song "The House of the Rising Sun" as well as by hits such as "We Gotta Get
Out of This Place", "It's My Life" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", the band
balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-oriented album
material. They became known in the U.S. as part of the British Invasion.
The Animals underwent numerous personnel changes in the mid-1960s and suffered
from poor business management. Under the name Eric Burdon and the Animals,
they moved to California and achieved commercial success as a psychedelic rock band,
before disbanding at the end of the decade. Altogether, the group had ten Top Twenty
hits in both the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The original lineup had a brief comeback in 1977 and 1983. There have been several
partial regroupings of the original era members since then under various names.
The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one
My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
------ organ solo ------
Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun
Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one
